Digital Designers Face Off in Digital Drag Race Today

by on November 17, 2008
in Design, Marketing, Social Media

Intel’s Digital Drag Race launches today. It’s a competition in which professional digital designers go head-to-head at designing under pressure. The site also has a consumer-generated aspect for non-professional designers.

The Idea: a collection of professional designers will spend 70 minutes on a computer powered by the brand new Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition Processor using Adobe Creative Suite 4 to create a 17 second motion graphic using supplied assets; video, music, vector images. The content of the videos are to center on the themes of power, speed and innovation.

After each race, judges will select competitors with the best final product. The first two digital drag races will be unveiled on the Digital Drag Race today, site visitors will be able to view and vote for their favorite designs.

There is a cool Social Media Aspect to the campaign, other designers and artistsare able to download the same tools used in the competition to create their own 17 second masterpiece which can then be uploaded to a YouTube Channel and will also be featured on the Digital Drag Race site.

Razorfish developed the program and Ignite Social Media developed the social media portion of the campaign.

Happy in Greenville

in Design

Happy in Greenville is a site with awesome interactivity and brilliant use of animation to convey both the feeling and culture of the people living in the city of Greenville, South Carolina. I think all sites which are based oncities should follow a similar concept but integrate the culture and aesthetics of each place, be it a country, city or even a small town.

I love the site, it’s very interactive (try clicking on the Moving Van under “City Secrets” or the painter which seems ot paint up the sky when you click on him). The City Secrets section let’s you find all sorts of information about the city itself as you click on different buildings. The music is pleasant and fits the theme of the whole site, it also seems to blend into the background instead of itrritate the hell out of you as with most other websites.

As you navigate the site you’ll find tons of very cute things which pop-up and add to the funtionality and aestheitcs of the site like a string of cyclists on the same bike and hot air balloon which rises when you click on it.

Ultimately the site is a Healthcare site and was created…

“To encourage Greenville, South Carolina-based users to explore the Bon Secours St. Francis Health System”

The site was created by Brains on Fire and Grow Interactive.

Coke Zero Zero 7 : Bond Brand Tie-in

Coke in the UK is doing a tie-in with the New James Bond Movie, Quantum of Solace. How cool is the Coke Zero Artwork for the tie-in? I Love it, I’d drink that.

from Adage.com

Coca-Cola Great Britain has teamed up with Sony Entertainment to help promote the upcoming James Bond film, “Quantum of Solace,” by renaming the Coke Zero brand as Coca-Cola Zero Zero 7.
In addition to the name change, which will last for the duration of the tie-in, Coca-Cola Zero Zero 7 will have specially crafted bottles featuring the 007 logo, a picture of star Daniel Craig and the new film’s title. (Bond fans will most certainly note the gun-barrel detailing on the Coke bottle’s familiar contour.)

Coke Zero will be seen in the film, but traditionalists will be pleased to learn that James Bond will not be drinking it — Agent 007 is sticking with his martini.

Coca-Cola Great Britain is just one of many sponsors to have poured around $100 million of marketing money into “Quantum of Solace,” the 22nd instalment of the Bond franchise. Other marketers include Heineken, Ford, Sony Ericsson, Sony Electronics, Smirnoff, Omega, Virgin Atlantic and Bollinger.

Duality of Humanity Exhibition

Obey has this cool new exhibition in the spirit of Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket i.e. the peace sign with “Born to Kill” next to it.

The title of the show is the picture above called “Duality of Humanity” of a kid soldier with a flower in his hat.

Very interesting imagery and something I love… Artistic criticism and commentary, all in one. The website looks pretty cool too :)

Design: The Surf Chair WorkStation

by on June 11, 2008
in Design

Now this is want in my Office…

The Surf Chair Workstation brings some ingenious ideas to the table. First, the monitor is suspended smartly in front of the user’s eyes, at a perfect distance. This design also helps you maintain a healthy back and a comfy position while spending hours and hours in front of your computer.

This cool design is called the Surf Chair Workstation and is designed for ergonomic support for your back at the same time being very comfortable as well as suspending the screen at a suitable distance so you don’t get what Masseuse’s call “computer neck” or fry your eyes. So now you can spend hours and hours in front of the computer, comfortably :)

Web Review: Kwippy.com

by on June 9, 2008
in Design, Social Media

Kwippy.com is basically an alternative to Twitter and Plurk.

The functions are simple enough featuring the main aspects of Twitter… Microblogging, with permalinks to the various posts (called “kwips”) and the ability to reply. As per my previous post which put Twitter against Plurk, I have no idea if kwippy.com’s API is being shared or released. Also, it has the same downfalls as that of Twitter when compared to Plurk, where the design is not very Web 2.0 and it’s limited to passing links and is hindered by functionality to include pictures and videos. It does have IM updates via Google Talk though, which makes it a bit easier to post and deal with. Twitter used to have this before it started experiencing its problems…

So far, kwippy.com functions as Twitter, but without it’s API being widely available and having it’s functionality widely dispersed throughout the open source community and the web 2.0 community. Open Source is a major ingredient of web 2.0. Functionality in this regard and the ability to pass content easily between desktop and web applications is paramount.

This is what I see as a major stumbling block for this new Indian startup. They do have a feedback section though… so let’s hope we see some really good development from them in future… you never know, with the way things are going these days, they might surpass both Twitter and Plurk. Let’s wait and see.

Another major stumbling block at the moment – It’s invite only… I may have some available – just get hold of me if you want one – leave a comment or catch me on Twitter.

South Africa to Launch Battery-Powered Car

by on June 3, 2008
in Design

In some positive news from South Africa, a battery-powered car is being developed and will be unveiled next year (no, it’s not a toy). This announcement was made by the Deputy Science and Technology Minister, Derek Hanekom. Given the effect on the country with the recent oil price increases and lack of investor confidence with the xenophobia crisis, a new alternative which would help people save money and provide a viable alternative is very welcome.
